The DCR vs Non-DCR Decision for Businesses
A critical decision for commercial solar is panel sourcing. If you want Net Metering to export surplus power to the grid, MNRE mandates using ALMM-approved DCR panels (List-I & List-II). However, if your facility consumes 100% of the power it generates (zero export), you can install a "Behind-the-Meter" system. Behind-the-Meter systems are exempt from ALMM rules, allowing you to use high-efficiency, lower-cost imported Non-DCR panels.
- Net Metering: Requires ALMM certified DCR panels
- Behind-the-Meter: Can use imported Non-DCR panels (lower CAPEX)
- Zero Export Devices (ZED) used to prevent inadvertent grid injection
- Behind-the-Meter requires prior DISCOM intimation but avoids net-metering delays
