PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana

Get up to ₹78,000 from the government.

Direct cash subsidy to your bank account when you install rooftop solar. SOLGURU handles 100% of the paperwork — you don't visit a single office.

The Scheme

What is PM Surya Ghar?

PM Surya Ghar — Muft Bijli Yojana is a Government of India scheme launched by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) to promote rooftop solar for residential households. The government provides a direct cash subsidy to your bank account — covering 30–60% of the total installation cost.

System SizeCentral SubsidyTypical Home
1 kW₹30,0001–2 BHK, bill ₹1,500–₹2,500
2 kW₹60,0002–3 BHK, bill ₹2,500–₹5,000
3 kW₹78,0003 BHK, bill ₹4,000–₹6,000
5 kW₹78,0003 BHK+, bill ₹6,000–₹10,000
10 kW₹78,000Large home, bill ₹10,000+
Important: ₹78,000 is the maximum subsidy for 3 kW and above. Even if you install 5 kW or 10 kW, the subsidy remains ₹78,000.

How the Subsidy Math Works

The central subsidy is calculated at a rate of ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW, and ₹18,000 for the 3rd kW. Here are three simple examples:

Example 1: 2 kW System
₹30,000 × 2
= ₹60,000 Subsidy
Example 2: 3 kW System
(₹30,000 × 2) + ₹18,000
= ₹78,000 Subsidy
Example 3: 5 kW System
Subsidy is capped at 3 kW
= ₹78,000 Subsidy

Who is Eligible?

Any Indian residential household with a valid DISCOM electricity connection
Must have own roof space (individual house, villa, row house)
Roof should not be heavily shaded
Apartments/flats (only if housing society registers as a group)
Commercial / industrial connections (different scheme)

The Process

6 steps to your subsidy.

STEP 1 10 minutes

Register on the National Portal

Register as a residential consumer on the PM Surya Ghar national portal.

  • 📄 Latest electricity bill (for consumer number)
  • 📄 Aadhaar card (for KYC)
  • 📄 Bank account details (for subsidy credit)
  • 📄 Mobile number (for OTP)
Tip: Keep a scanned PDF of your electricity bill ready. If you use SOLGURU, we handle the entire registration for you.
STEP 2 15 minutes

Apply for Rooftop Solar

Log in and fill the solar application form — select state, DISCOM, consumer number, system size, and choose an empanelled vendor.

  • Select your state and DISCOM
  • Enter consumer number and sanctioned load
  • Choose system size (1 kW / 2 kW / 3 kW+)
  • Select an empanelled vendor from the portal list
Critical: Only choose a vendor that is empanelled on the PM Surya Ghar portal. If your vendor is not empanelled, your subsidy WILL be rejected.
STEP 3 7–15 days wait

DISCOM Feasibility Approval

Your local DISCOM reviews the application, checks grid capacity, sanctioned load, and technical constraints.

  • Is there sufficient grid capacity in your area?
  • Is your sanctioned load enough?
  • Any technical constraints?

Once approved, you receive a feasibility approval letter on the portal — your green signal to proceed.

Note: If your sanctioned load is less than the solar system size, you may need to apply for a load increase first.
STEP 4 1–3 days

Installation by Empanelled Vendor

The vendor installs the solar system on your rooftop.

  • Panel mounting structure + solar panels
  • Inverter installation + wiring
  • DC distribution box + AC distribution box
  • Earthing and safety devices

After installation, the vendor uploads the commissioning report on the portal with photos.

Tip: Take your own photos and videos during installation. Good vendors also provide a commissioning certificate.
STEP 5 15–30 days wait

Net Meter + DISCOM Inspection

After solar installation, the DISCOM sends a team to inspect, install a bi-directional meter, and commission the system.

  • Inspect installation for safety and compliance
  • Install bi-directional (net) meter
  • Commission system on their network
Critical: This is often the slowest step. If the DISCOM delays beyond 15 working days, escalate in this order: (1) Call the national helpline 15555, (2) Contact your DISCOM nodal officer for PM Surya Ghar, (3) File a grievance on the PM Surya Ghar portal under the Grievance tab, (4) Escalate to the State Nodal Agency (SNA) for renewable energy, (5) If still unresolved, approach the State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC).
STEP 6 15–30 days after commissioning

Subsidy Credited to Your Bank

After DISCOM confirms commissioning on the portal, MNRE verifies the installation and the subsidy is released directly to your Aadhaar-linked bank account.

  • MNRE verifies installation details
  • Subsidy amount released
  • Money credited to Aadhaar-linked bank account
Tip: Make sure your Aadhaar is linked to an active bank account. If the account has issues (frozen, KYC pending), the subsidy transfer will fail.

Common Pitfalls

Reasons subsidies get rejected

"Name Mismatch (DISCOM vs Aadhaar vs PAN)"

Fix: Your name on the electricity bill, Aadhaar card, and PAN card must match EXACTLY. Name change in DISCOM takes time, so start this early.

"Phone Number Mismatch"

Fix: The mobile number registered with your Aadhaar, Bank account, and DISCOM must be the same to avoid OTP and DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) failures.

"Insufficient CIBIL Score"

Fix: If applying for a solar loan via Jan Samarth, banks require a healthy CIBIL score. A poor score will result in loan rejection and halt the project.

"Pending Load Extension or New Connection"

Fix: If your sanctioned load is less than your solar capacity, the load extension or new connection process with the DISCOM can take weeks, heavily delaying feasibility approval.

"Aadhaar not linked to bank account"

Fix: Visit your bank branch and request Aadhaar-bank seeding for DBT. Subsidy transfer will fail if KYC is incomplete or the account is frozen.

"Vendor not empanelled"

Fix: Always verify your vendor is listed on the PM Surya Ghar portal. Unregistered vendors cannot process the subsidy.

"Incomplete Commissioning Report"

Fix: Your vendor must upload all required photos (panels, inverter, meter, earthing) with exact coordinates on the portal.

Don't leave ₹78,000 on the table.

SOLGURU handles every step — registration, DISCOM, installation, net metering, subsidy application — so you get the maximum benefit with zero effort.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to receive the PM Surya Ghar subsidy?

The typical timeline from registration to subsidy credit is 60–120 days (2–4 months). The fastest states process it in 45 days. The biggest delays usually occur during the DISCOM feasibility check and net meter installation stages.

Can I install solar if I live in an apartment?

Individual flat owners generally cannot apply. However, if your housing society or RWA registers as a group on the PM Surya Ghar portal, the society can install rooftop solar on the common terrace and apply for the subsidy collectively.

What happens if my name on the electricity bill is different from Aadhaar?

Your subsidy application will be rejected. The name on your electricity bill (DISCOM record), Aadhaar card, and bank account must match exactly. See our KYC Mismatch Guide for step-by-step resolution.

Is the subsidy available for commercial or industrial connections?

No. PM Surya Ghar is exclusively for domestic/residential electricity connections (LT-1 category). Commercial and industrial consumers can benefit from Accelerated Depreciation (40% in Year 1) and other state-level incentives instead.

Do I need to take a loan, or can I pay upfront?

You can either pay the full amount upfront to your vendor or apply for a collateral-free solar loan at ~7% interest through the Jan Samarth Portal. Many homeowners prefer the loan route since the subsidy reduces the outstanding principal after commissioning.
